A comprehensive workshop that will take you through the collage process step-by-step. We will begin with technique to transfer your Old Irish Goat reference image to the substrate, then we will paint with acrylic to establish shading and fun color. Then, using the gel plate, we will create our own collage paper palette which will be torn into tidbits and applied on top of the under-painting to create an impressionistic, painterly collage. Essence of Mulranny Arts, located at our Old Convent Campus, offers a variety of workshops, classes and art retreats for groups of six to 12 students. Mulranny is a small seaside village on Clew Bay in Co. Mayo. It is located at the dramatic western edge of Ireland, the end boundary of Europe. Here, land and sea meet at the threshold of a powerful creative adventure. Croagh Patrick, Ireland’s holy mountain, rises majestically from the sea on the opposite side of the bay. It is here that the ancients as well as the modern day pilgrims have climbed the steep path to the summit. You can see the small chapel’s reflective glint on the top. This is sheep and goat country and below the village they stand still as the tide comes in over their grazing patch on a salt marsh. They have learned to patiently stand and wait for the waters to recede so they can once again graze the salty grass. The rhythm of life here is dominated by these tides, flowing over the white sand beaches and then leaving in hasty withdrawal to the vast Atlantic Ocean.

Be inspired by beloved Mexican painter Magdalena Carmen Frida Kahlo y Calderón aka Frida! You do NOT need to know how to draw faces, Elizabeth will teach you a photographic transfer technique that works like magic in order to start with a good proportional likeness. Portrait emphasis will be on creating an acrylic encaustic effect background, transferring your drawing directly from a photo print-out, and shading black pastel line-art by rubbing with your fingers. Add a fabulous floral crown inspired by fresh local flowers and hand-painted papers created in class through the gel printing process. Floral collage emphasis will be on utilizing gel printed papers to develop form through light and shadow. Hand painted papers will be glued down over a basic acrylic under-painting to create impressionistic painterly collaged florals for Frida’s crown or a bouquet. Paint your own collage papers, print local leaves, learn mark making, and more!

Tuscany Watercolor Sketchbook: Sketching in Italy includes daily, in-depth lessons, opportunities to sketch on location, a wide variety of botanical inspiration from roses, to herbs, to Tuscany flora, as well as medieval villages and and tucked away panoramic locations. Open to students of all artistic levels, Tuscany Watercolor Sketchbook makes ink and wash sketching accessible to everyone. Based on the gorgeous flowers of Puscina Flowers, an organic farm in Tuscany, your art will reflect the colors of the season. Accommodations are in a unique boutique hotel nestled just outside the center of Città della Pieve. Although some sketching experience is helpful, it is definitely not necessary. Città della Pieve is our home base. A small medieval hill town on the border of Tuscany and Umbria. This town is walkable in every direction, super clean, and full of friendly people (take a video tour below). Take an evening stroll for a glass of wine or a morning walk for a cappuccino and a cornetto, enjoy access to shops and restaurants just a stone’s throw from our hotel. Boutique Hotel Vanucci: Hotel Vannucci began as a project of Vittoria Spinola, daughter of King Vittorio Emanuele II, who fled Pisa (and an arranged marriage with her elderly husband) to start a new life with her lover in Città della Pieve. Here, she and her soon-to-be new husband, Paolo, built two villas that became luxurious holiday accommodations for wealthy Romans vacationing in the countryside. In 1903 one of the villas became Hotel Vannucci, and today it maintains the elegance and refinement of its inception, with luxurious sleeping rooms, marble bathrooms and inviting gardens. A stay here is truly special, nestled just outside the medieval walls of the historic, and unspoiled, village of Città della Pieve.
